Simple Pleasures

This is our first Thanksgiving on the road. We thought we would be all alone. We thought the few campers that were camping might not even celebrate the holiday. We were wrong on both counts. Thanksgiving seems to be a popular time to camp(at least here in Florida) and many of our fellow campers have gone all out to decorate and celebrate. We have met so many nice people. We didn’t try to prepare a traditional feast for the day but managed turkey sandwiches with broccoli salad and one food item from our combined family traditions; my mom’s cranberry sauce and Mark’s mom’s pumpkin pie. Even though this isn’t a typical year we are thankful for the things we are always thankful for: family and friends, our little dog and of course the privilege of life, love and the pursuit of happiness. But in addition to those things we are thankful for a tangible item this year. We have two new additions to our “must have” camping list. When we decided to do this trip we knew Mark’s role would have to be very low key. He still can’t actively walk or hike and can’t pedal a bike until his incision has completely healed . But thanks to a recommendation from Jim and Carmen (full-timers who write an amazing blog called “Living in Beauty “) we purchased a pair of folding electric bikes. Ironically the bikes have marine names (Mark’s dolphin and my Nemo) and have made our Florida adventure possible. Mark’s bike has full assist so he can get anywhere he needs to go without pedaling. The other great feature is that they fold to such a compact size they fit easily in the cab of our truck and are always in easy reach as well as protected from the elements. I think JFK is the person noted for saying, “Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of riding a bike.” We are thankful this year for that simple pleasure!
